What "Mezza" Actually Means - And Why It's a Whole Way of Eating

There's a small tension baked into our name that we've never tried to hide. Meza is Swahili for table. And yet, most of you are eating our shawarma in the car, at your desk, on the kerb outside, or on your sofa. No table in sight.

So what gives?

Meza: The Swahili Word With a Longer History Than You'd Think

The word meza came to the Swahili coast with Portuguese traders centuries ago - borrowed from mesa, meaning table. It got absorbed into Swahili the way the coast absorbs everything: quietly, completely, and made entirely its own.

Today, meza just means table. Simple. Everyday. But underneath that simplicity is something bigger: the idea that food is a thing you gather around.

That's also where the Mediterranean word mezze comes in - small plates, passed around, shared across a table full of people who are all eating something slightly different but from the same spread. Two unrelated words, one shared meaning. Food is communal. Sitting down together is the whole point.

We named it after the table because the table does the work.

We put both ideas into one name {Mezza} and built a restaurant around them.

Kenya Already Eats This Way

Here's what's funny: nobody had to explain this philosophy to Nairobi. You already live it.

Nobody orders nyama choma for one. Nobody eats pilau in silence at a table by themselves without someone eventually pulling up a chair. Githeri is a pot meant to last. Ugali is torn and shared. The whole Kenyan food tradition is built on the idea that the meal is the gathering - the gathering isn't just a nice backdrop to the meal.

So when we say mezza is a way of eating, we're not introducing a foreign concept. We're naming something you've been doing your whole life.

So Why a Wrap? Because the Table Moved

Here's where we get honest about the tension.

Nairobi is busy. You're busy. The version of the table that involves everyone sitting down at the same time, for an hour, with nowhere else to be - that's a luxury most weeks. The table moved. It moved to the matatu. To the boot of a car. To a desk with a deadline. To a sofa on a Friday night when nobody wants to cook and someone's already opened the mezza app.

We didn't fight that. We followed it.

A shawarma you can eat on the go, built from the same care as something you'd sit down for - that's the whole point of the name. We wanted to build a table you can carry.

Everything Made In-House, Because Shortcuts Show

If the table moves with you, then what's on it still has to be worth sitting down for. That's why we make everything in-house: the sauces, the marinades, the pita breads, the falafel, the pickles. Everything.

When you bite into a Mezza shawarma, you're tasting decisions someone made that morning in the kitchen - not a bag opened out the back. That's the standard the name demands. You don't name yourself after the table and then cut corners on what's on it.

Your Sauces, Your Pickles, Your Call

One more thing about tables: everyone at one has different taste. Your spicy is not my spicy. You stack the pickles. I skip the onions entirely.

That's exactly how it works at Mezza. Sauces, pickles, heat level - your call, every time. The table where nobody gets the same plate but everyone's happy. That's the goal.

Mezza Mondays: The Name in Practice

If you want to see the whole philosophy in action, come on a Monday. Mezza Mondays are 2-for-1 - because the name quite literally means bring someone. The deal exists to make the table easier to fill.

Bring your person. Split the shawarma. Argue about which sauce is better. That's the point.

We call you Mezzani. It's the word for the people at the table. That's you, whether you're reading this over lunch, on the mat, or at an actual desk in Westlands with a cold brew going cold beside you.

The table doesn't care where it is. It cares who's around it.
